Anthropic agrees to a $1.5B settlement with authors over pirated books
Anthropic agreed to pay $1.5 billion to settle the Bartz v. Anthropic class action over books it had downloaded from pirate sites, about $3,000 for each of roughly 500,000 works. The deal also required destruction of the pirated copies and covered past conduct only, not future training. For practitioners, it put a concrete price on poor data provenance and increased the importance of licensed, well-documented training data.
